Fans tear James Harden’s beard-centered ‘AI slop’ animated short apart

Cleveland Cavaliers star athlete James Harden recently partnered up with Utopai Studios for an AI-animated short celebrating his legendary beard. Following their recent 122-116 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, Harden shared on his social media the new AI animation.

Harden, 36, partnered with Utopai Studios on an AI-animated short film that honors his famous beard. The video is currently available on Harden’s social media platforms. The NBA veteran stands out as a top basketball player and a widely known personality in global sports culture. He’s famous for his achievements in sports and also for his distinctive beard, which has become a key part of his public image and a source of inspiration for his supporters over time. The new animated short transforms that larger-than-life persona into a fun, character-focused narrative.

“My team and I linked up with Utopai Studios – taking a real idea and turning it into a full animated world through storytelling, not just tech. For everybody who’s been rocking with the beard since day one. More on the way!” Harden wrote on social media.

However, soon after its release, the video was met with severe negative comments with people calling out the AI used in the animation. “Get this AI slop off my screen.” wrote one fan on X (formerly known as Twitter). Another one wrote, “Forgive him he don’t got internet y’all.” Another fan bluntly bashed Harden’s video and commented, “Looks like ai nonsense.” Another fan criticized the use of AI and pointed out how Harden could have used an animation student to do it instead: “Any animation student would do this better and it would’ve done wonders for their career. You had an opportunity to create impact but you chose to release slop.”

Harden and Utopai Studios started working together when Harden’s team members saw PAI, Utopai Studios’ unique AI for cinematic storytelling, and presented the technology to him.
