With his stardom continuing to ascend, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is looking to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder back to the mountaintop and further cement his legacy in the annals of the NBA.

He has a strong chance to join Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James as the only players in league history to win back-to-back MVPs and win back-to-back titles in those exact years.

While it has not been easy against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, there is no denying that Gilgeous-Alexander has climbed the ladder of the game’s greatest point guards. He is also a Finals MVP, a four-time All-Star, a four-time All-NBA First Team member, and a scoring champion.

Former NBA forward Charlie Villanueva, however, was still unsure if SGA had entered the top 10 because it is “too early.” In a recent episode of “To the Baha,” Villanueva ranked, in no particular order, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Stephen Curry, Allen Iverson, John Stockton, Steve Nash, Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Jason Kidd, Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson, and Russell Westbrook over Gilgeous-Alexander.

Villanueva had to think hard, with one of his co-hosts, Deron Williams, assisting him with Parker and Kidd.

“Why is the world comparing and ranking? I hate it! I hate it!” added Williams. “It’s out of respect for some of these guys, it’s hard to just be like, ‘Oh, he’s better than John Stockton.'”

“Yeah, like now, when he’s (Gilgeous-Alexander) still playing. You know what I mean?” added Villanueva.

As with any list, the choices will always be subjective, and Villanueva stood by his.

Villanueva was drafted by the Toronto Raptors as the seventh overall pick in 2005, entering the NBA in the same year as Paul and Williams. He did not get the chance to play with super elite point guards for the majority of his 11-year career.

It is also worth noting that they may have taped the episode before Gilgeous-Alexander was named MVP for the second straight year.
