Dodgers’ Blake Snell returns to IL, may need surgery
The Los Angeles Dodgers announced hours before Friday’s matchup vs. the L.A. Angels that Blake Snell was being scratched from his scheduled start for an unknown reason. Well, the reason for manager Dave Roberts benching the star left-hander has been revealed, as Snell is going back to the IL.
Reports indicate that loose bodies were found in Snell’s elbow, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The 33-year-old ace may have to undergo surgery, as it is the same issue Tarik Skubal with the Detroit Tigers is dealing with. The Dodgers placed Snell on the 15-day IL.
“Blake Snell’s injury woes continue: He goes back on the IL with loose bodies in his elbow that normally requires surgery,” reported Nightengale. “Dodgers recalled left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes.”
This update has to be frustrating for the 11-year veteran. He missed the first several weeks of the 2026 campaign due to shoulder fatigue he suffered in October 2025. After finally working his way back and making his season debut in the Dodgers’ 7-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves on May 9, where he recorded five strikeouts while allowing six hits, two walks, and four earned runs, Snell heads back to the IL for an extended period of time.
The Dodgers will provide more updates in the coming days while Blake Snell navigates the new injury. In the meantime, the club will have to continue with the season without him. Los Angeles is expected to strictly use the bullpen against the Angels on Friday, with Will Klein getting the start.
