Cubs’ Dansby Swanson accomplishes feat not seen in at least 125 years

The Chicago Cubs have been playing some solid baseball of late, winners of four out of their last five games to push their record to 42-37 on the 2026 MLB season. While they’re not on the torrid pace they were to start the season, they’re also not on the losing rollercoaster that threatened to upend their season last month.

On Wednesday, the Cubs picked up an impressive win over the New York Mets on the road by a score of 10-3. The hero of this game was Dansby Swanson, who hit two home runs, including a grand slam, in the win, totaling seven RBIs in total.

After the game, Cubs reporter Jesse Rogers of ESPN reported on a bit of history that Swanson made during the game.

“Not a surprise since the DH is relatively new in the NL but Dansby Swanson is the first Cubs No. 9 hitter since at least 1901 with 2 HR including a grand slam in a game,” reported Rogers on X, formerly Twitter.

As Rogers reported, the history for designated hitters in the National League doesn’t go back a terribly long time, but it’s still nonetheless an impressive feat for Swanson, who was on fire (clearly) throughout the afternoon on Wednesday in New York City.

Swanson is currently in his fourth season with the Cubs, having signed there in 2022 after his stint with the Atlanta Braves, which included a Golden Glove award and a World Series championship the prior year.

While his tenure with Chicago has been up and down at times, hopefully this latest outburst will get him hot as the season approaches its second half.

The Cubs will next hit the field on Thursday, once again against the Mets.
