Cowboys’ Tyler Booker backs Dallas’ NFL Draft plan with ‘different’ Caleb Downs take

Scared eyes have been cast toward the Dallas Cowboys because of their first-round selection of safety Caleb Downs. And Cowboys’ offensive lineman Tyler Booker backed the selection in the NFL Draft with a “different” take on Downs, according to a post on X by Nick Harris.

“Tyler Booker texted Brian Schottenheimer after they drafted Caleb Downs, a former college teammate of his at Alabama: “This guy is different.”

The thing that held the Cowboys back in 2025 was their defense. They had one of the worst units in the league. Meanwhile, the offense hummed along at a high level.

And the thought is: Fix the defense, and the wins will rack up.

Downs not only brings a steadiness, but also leadership qualities that could help the defense overall. His football smarts are off the charts, according to The Athletic.

“Downs sees the field like it’s a chess board and plays with an exceptional combination of intelligence, urgency, and toughness, allowing him to be disruptive from anywhere on the field,” Dane Brugler wrote. “His intangibles and on-field versatility will make him an impactful NFL starter early in his career.”

Also, Downs plays with physical force. That’s a key element the Cowboys missed last season.

“A human missile, Downs jumps off the tape because of his fast, competitive play style,” Brugler wrote. “Despite having average size, he is an elite tackler who fills with impressive body control and strength at contact.

“He was most productive downhill and near the line of scrimmage, but showed the same high-level reaction skills in coverage. His pattern recognition and situational awareness are above average, although you’d wish there was more ball production on his resume.”

The Cowboys used trades to get what they wanted, according to dallasnews.com.

“It was surgical,” coach Brian Schottenheimer said of the trades the Cowboys made Thursday.

On Saturday, the Cowboys will have five draft selections, including three in the fourth round.
