Clippers’ Tyronn Lue gets huge vote of confidence after Play-In Tournament loss

Tyronn Lue consistently garners praise for guiding the Los Angeles Clippers through injury monsoons and a challenging slate of competition in the Western Conference, but there comes a time when being good at adapting is simply not enough. LA blew a 13-point lead versus the Golden State Warriors in a must-win NBA Play-in Tournament game on Wednesday and is headed for another uncomfortably long offseason. There were bound to be questions about the head coach’s future.

And they have now been answered. Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank told reporters that he is sticking with Lue, per Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints. He took his stance even farther, proclaiming that the 2016 championship-winning HC will be in LA “for a long, long time.” Even when the squad was at its lowest point of the season, Frank did not consider making a change.

“There were never any conversations when we started 6-21 that Ty wouldn’t be the coach of this team,” he said, per Azarly. Although the Clippers have not advanced past the first round of the playoffs since 2021, they clearly believe that Lue is their best chance at becoming relevant.

The franchise is in the midst of a new era, having abandoned its longstanding status as the Lakers’ roommate and moving to the Intuit Dome last season. James Harden, Paul George, Ivica Zubac, Norman Powell and Chris Paul are all gone, as new players like Darius Garland and Bennedict Mathurin get themselves acclimated to the City of Angels. A potential scandal also looms large, as the organization and entire fandom anxiously await the NBA’s decision on the Kawhi Leonard-Aspiration investigation.

During a period of change and uncertainty, the Clippers will crave stability. Lawrence Frank identifies Tyronn Lue as the leader who could navigate any possible tumult that blocks the team’s path. Fans do not want the organization or coach to be complacent, however. They need to see a clear vision that will finally vault the Clips into genuine title contention.

Another Play-In exit, and the words “long time” may switch to “out of time.” And that goes for Lue and Frank.
