CJ McCollum, Hawks agree to $21 million contract extension

The Atlanta Hawks have some big questions to answer this offseason as they look to build off last year’s run to the playoffs, where they took the New York Knicks further than any other team. The Hawks have already extended the contract of head coach Quinn Snyder, and on Sunday, the franchise made a big commitment to another key piece of the team.

“Atlanta Hawks guard CJ McCollum has agreed to a one-year, $21 million contract extension with the franchise, plus a trade kicker, agent Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports Management tells ESPN. McCollum has been eligible for an extension until June 30 and commits to a new deal that keeps him out of free agency,” reported ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania on X, formerly Twitter.

McCollum was the centerpiece of the return package that the Hawks got for franchise icon Trae Young last year from the Washington Wizards, and after a rough start, he ended up being a huge part of Atlanta’s late-season turnaround, which saw them make the playoffs for the first time in three years.

McCollum had a great first three games of the Hawks’ first round series against the Knicks, hitting several clutch buckets down the stretch of Game 2, and a game-winner in Game 3, to give Atlanta two wins, which was more than any other team was able to get on New York during their run to the NBA title.

McCollum figures to provide a stable veteran presence and scoring threat for at least one more year on the Hawks.
