Chris Simms sheds more light on Rams’ Sean McVay’s NFL draft behavior
The Los Angeles Rams surprised many of their fans in the opening round of the 2026 NFL Draft late last month when they selected Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick.
Because the Rams are a team with a realistic Super Bowl chance, who already feature veteran quarterback in Matthew Stafford already on the team, the move was puzzling for many, especially considering that they didn’t take a player that could help them in the immediate future, while their championship window remains open, rather than building for the future.
The live reaction of Rams head coach Sean McVay turned heads everywhere, as he was visibly upset, a gesture that many interpreted as a way of supporting Stafford.
But now, NFL Insider Chris Simms is revealing that McVay’s sour demeanor wasn’t because of the Simpson pick, but because of some kind of argument that took place immediately before the selection was made.
“The reason he in the press conference was pissed off had neither to do with him acting or the pick but had to do with some sort of volatile situation that happened before they went out there,” Simms said via NBC Sports. “There was some little argument about something. He assured me it was nothing like major, but he was a little peed off right there at that moment. That’s what he told me. I don’t think he’d have any problem with me sharing that.”
According to Simms, McVay later revealed that he was “grumpy” during the selection, but that it wasn’t related to the pick of Simpson.
