Spencer Fano finally got to meet the player he has spent years idolizing, and the moment left him visibly starstruck. The Browns rookie sat down for an interview with Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Thomas ahead of his first career NFL action, and Fano did not hide how much the moment meant to him.

“This is crazy. I’m sitting next to one of my heroes right now,” Fano said. “You’re making me kind of nervous.”

Thomas leaned into the moment rather than easing the pressure. “Well, I’m doing my best to try to make you nervous, man,” he said.

Fano’s admiration for Thomas dates back well before the two ever met. The Browns selected Fano with the No. 9 overall pick out of Utah in this year’s draft, and he named Thomas as his answer the moment reporters asked him to identify the greatest left tackle of all time during his very first conference call with Cleveland media.

“I feel like I know a good amount about him. Ten years where he didn’t miss a snap, and then not only 10 years with not missing a snap but playing the way he did,” Fano said at the time. “I’m really, really grateful and excited to be able to learn from him.”

The connection carries extra symbolism given the position both men play. Thomas manned left tackle for Cleveland from 2007 to 2017, earning 10 Pro Bowl selections without ever missing a single offensive snap across his career, a run that helped land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Fano, who played right tackle for most of his final two seasons at Utah, is now set to shift back to left tackle full-time in Cleveland, stepping into the exact spot that made Thomas a franchise legend.

The Browns overhauled their offensive line around Fano this offseason, adding veterans like Tytus Howard, Zion Johnson, Elgton Jenkins, and Teven Jenkins to support their top pick as he transitions to the pros. For a rookie who grew up idolizing the position’s gold standard, sharing the field, and now a broadcast booth, with that same legend marks a fitting start to his career.
