A third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership made last season a miserable one for Rangers, who amassed fewer points than not only Celtic but Heart of Midlothian too.

The domestic woes of Rangers supporters were compounded by their team’s poor showing in Europe, where the Glaswegian giants finished 32nd out of 34 in the league phase of the Europa League.

Only one of their eight matches ended in victory, as Rangers fell at the first hurdle in a competition they had reached the final of just over three years earlier.

The priority for new manager Derek McInnes is to win the Premiership, but a run in Europe would also be welcomed by the Ibrox faithful.

First Rangers must qualify for the Europa League proper. Their first task is to get past Jagiellonia Bialystok in the third qualifying round, after which come the play-offs.

Rangers should not take anything for granted. They are facing a capable side which finished third in Poland’s top flight last term, just four points behind champions Lech Poznan.

In 2024/25, Jagiellonia reached the quarter-finals of the Conference League, where they were beaten by eventual runners-up Real Betis.

Jagiellonia are not a continental powerhouse, but they are good enough to give Rangers a bloody nose if the Scottish team takes anything for granted.

McInnes’ men were held to a 1-1 draw by Dundee United on matchday one of the new Premiership campaign, leaving Rangers trailing Celtic already.

It was not a case of Rangers dominating the game but failing to kill their opponents off. Dundee United actually edged the xG and had the clearest chance to score the decisive third goal of the game.

Rangers have now turned their attention towards the Europa League, as they seek a morale-boosting win in the away leg of this qualifier.

No one can win this Europa League qualifying tie on Thursday, but it is possible to lose it.

With a second leg still to come – and in front of their own fans at Ibrox – there is no need for Rangers to take undue risks this week.

The onus is on Jagiellonia Bialystok to make the running in their home match, so Rangers must deliver a controlled, measured performance.

A draw would be a good result for the Gers and Jagiellonia would not be too disappointed with that outcome either.

Rangers both scored and conceded against Dundee United last time out, and we could see more of the same in this one.

Jagiellonia Bialystok were the third-highest scorers in the Polish league last term, so they know where the goal is.

Jagiellonia will back themselves to score on home turf, but Rangers can breach the opposition backline as well.

Summer signing Lawrence Shankland got the nod up front against Dundee United, with Youssef Chermiti entering the fray at half-time to support the former Hearts striker.

Yet it was an attacking midfielder rather than a striker who scored Rangers’ only goal of the game, with Thelo Aasgaard equalising early in the second half.

The Liverpool-born Norway international was a threat for much of the game, taking more shots (four) than any other player on the pitch, as well as completing the most passes and dribbles.

With that in mind, he represents good value in the anytime goalscorer market for Thursday’s contest against Jagiellonia Bialystok.
