Courtland Sutton training camp concern gets clarity from Broncos’ Sean Payton

The Denver Broncos have been dealing with several injuries in training camp, with wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, linebacker Nik Bonitto, and center Lyke Wattenberg being bothered by various ailments. Coach Sean Payton, however, has downplayed them, maintaining that they will enter the new season armed and ready.

Wide receiver Courtland Sutton, meanwhile, did not participate in practice for the second straight time on Wednesday. It remains unclear if he was nursing anything or was just given back-to-back rest days. He was present on the field, but he did not wear his helmet and pads.

Payton allayed concerns about Sutton’s health, as reported by Bleacher Report’s James Palmer.

“Sounds like Sutton will be practicing tomorrow, per Sean Payton,” wrote Palmer on X.

The two-time Pro Bowler has proven his durability in the last five seasons, missing only three games.

Last season, he logged 74 receptions for 1,017 yards and seven touchdowns, helping the Broncos to a 14-3 record and the AFC West crown. He will remain as the primary target of quarterback Bo Nix, who is coming off an ankle injury.

The 30-year-old Sutton was a central figure in offensive coordinator Davis Webb’s first stint in Denver last season. Sutton has repeatedly lauded Webb, even calling him a “mad scientist.”

“It’s a combination of things that he’s learned from Coach Payton and things that he’s liked and seen from his own experience of playing and coaching in this league. I know that he’s ready. There’s not a thought behind it. I know that he’s ready,” said Sutton in June.

The Broncos will open their preseason schedule on August 14 against the Atlanta Falcons.
