Chris Paul reflects on shocking vetoed Lakers trade
Chris Paul is one of the most decorated players in Los Angeles Clippers history, but he almost teamed up with Kobe Bryant on the Lakers. The Lakers’ veto of the Chris Paul trade is one of the most discussed parts of NBA lore. The possibilities for the all-star backcourt would have been endless, and Paul possibly could have ended his career with a ring.
On the latest episode of the Pat McAfee Show, Paul opened up about the trade and reflected on what happened.
“It was very wild to say the least. It was crazy times. Our team at the time was owned by the league, right? We had just came out of CBA negotiations, and it’s a lot of stories that’s been out there now where people say, ‘This is what happened. This is what happened.’ I remember where I was, and me and Kobe had actually got on the phone and talked that night. And then yeah, it was basically like a little sh*t storm from there. It was a crazy time. It was a crazy time, and just knowing the emotional rollercoaster that it was at the time was, was really different. But I got the phone call basically that this trade ain’t happening no more.”
Once the Chris Paul trade to the Lakers was vetoed, Paul was ultimately traded to the Los Angeles Clippers and was the architect of one of the most successful eras in their organization’s history. Although they never were able to break through as champions, the Lob City Clippers always found themselves amongst the contenders in the Western Conference with their high-octane brand of basketball.
While a stint on the Lakers would have been eventful, he certainly cemented his legacy in Los Angeles either way.
