Panthers add ex-Dolphins starter to practice squad

The Carolina Panthers signed linebacker Tyrel Dodson to their practice squad on Monday after the Miami Dolphins released him during their final roster cuts this past weekend.

Dodson, 28, entered the NFL in 2019 as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills. He spent his first five seasons with the Bills before joining the Seattle Seahawks in 2024. After being waived by the Seahawks in November 2024, he was claimed by Miami and remained with the Dolphins through the 2025 season.

Dodson produced the best statistical season of his career in 2025. He started all 16 games for Miami and compiled career highs of 129 combined tackles and 5.0 sacks. He also recorded one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He finished second on the team in tackles and third in sacks that season.

Before his time with the Dolphins, Dodson had a career-high 10 starts for Buffalo in 2023 after injuries affected the Bills’ linebacker group. He finished that season with a Pro Football Focus grade of 89.5, which was the second-highest among NFL linebackers, after earning just a 48.4 grade in 2022.

Carolina’s move came shortly after the team also agreed to terms with veteran inside linebacker Bobby Okereke on Saturday. Dodson will join a linebacker group that also includes Pro Bowler Devin Lloyd, who signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Panthers during free agency in the spring.
