Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire calls out USC fans for underattended home opener

USC football drew heat from critics for drawing a low attendance against San Jose State. To the point USC released a school statement addressing the near empty stadium. But time to add Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire as one of the critics toward the Trojans.

The reigning Big 12 champion head coach spoke out about seeing the disperse crowd inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

“Not to take any shots, because I have a lot of respect for USC and Lincoln Riley, but it’s really awesome to be playing in Lubbock, Texas, knowing we’re going to be playing in front of 60,000. It’s going to be warm,” McGuire said. “It’s going to be every bit as warm as it was Saturday.”

So McGuire wasn’t through with believing the hot temperatures for kickoff against Abilene Christian won’t effect his team.

“There’s not going to be any excuse of why they’re (fans) not going to be here for us,” McGuire said. “The great thing is we got some really tough people in West Texas that love their football and they’re going to show up, no matter what the weather’s like. There’s not going to be any excuse of why they’re not going to be here for us.”

USC operated under an extreme heat advisory, with temperatures reportedly reaching 94 on the football field. USC rolled to the 42-26 romp of the Spartans. But still, USC lured out critics calling out fans for refusing to support their team in hot weather, including The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel.

So the Trojans once again will play underneath warm temperatures on Friday, with 80 degrees rising as the early prediction. Yet USC will face a team used to even hotter weather in Fresno State.
