Steelers GM stands firm on contract policy with Joey Porter Jr. standoff lingering

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still in a contract dispute with Joey Porter Jr., with the new season about to begin. But it sounds like general manager Omar Khan is sticking to the organization’s contract policies, with negotiations ongoing.

Reports indicate that Khan is not planning to negotiate a deal with Porter once the season is officially underway, according to Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. It appears the Steelers are giving themselves just a couple more weeks to potentially get a deal done with the 26-year-old cornerback.

“Omar Khan confirms that the Steelers’ policy of not negotiating contracts with players while the season is going on will stand,” Adamski reported.

Khan was also asked about Porter’s availability in practice, as the four-year veteran is dealing with a back injury. While the Steelers sound hopeful that Porter will return and play in the Week 1 opener, Khan did offer some insight on Pittsburgh’s desire to keep the star corner with the team for the long haul, per Adamski.

“Anyone we feel is healthy and available to us, we expect to practice,” Khan said. “Joey knows how we feel about him, and we hope he finishes his career here.”
