Vikings cut Max Brosmer after keeping JJ McCarthy on 53-man roster

The newest trend in the NFL this year was for teams to keep four quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster. The Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons, and Minnesota Vikings all did so on cutdown day, and had it not been for Dillon Gabriel being put on the injured reserve, the Cleveland Browns likely would have rostered four signal callers, too.

The Vikings’ decision to do that, in particular, was a major shock. The team’s starter is Kyler Murray, who won a QB competition over J.J. McCarthy. While reports suggested that Minnesota could trade or release their former first-rounder, they ultimately decided to hold onto him. However, training camp struggles and frequent injury issues meant Minnesota also needed to keep Carson Wentz, a proven veteran with plenty of experience.

On top of all of that, the Vikings also kept Max Brosmer on the 53-man roster. Just one day after making the team, though, the Minnesota Golden Gophers product was released, according to Ian Rapoport. Brosmer went undrafted last year but started two games for the Vikings. In seven total games of action, Brosmer had 328 yards on 71 passing attempts.

While the local talent has shown flashes, there just wasn’t enough room on the roster for him when the team was making moves on the margins. Minnesota was awarded two offensive linemen through waivers, which forced them to further trim the roster. There is a chance that Brosmer will clear waivers and rejoin the team on the practice squad.
