Kentucky basketball misses out on star Missouri transfer after 180

The Kentucky basketball program is not too far away from kicking off its 2026 college basketball season. The Wildcats are looking to bounce back after losing in the Round of 32 against Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament last season.

Recently, it was announced that Kentucky would be bringing in star transfer portal prospect Mark Mitchell from SEC rival Missouri, but on Monday, the team got a rough update on that front.

“BREAKING: Forward Mark Mitchell will return to Missouri instead of transferring to Kentucky,” reported On3 Sports on X, formerly Twitter, citing a report from Joe Tipton.

It’s certainly a strange turn of events for the Wildcats, who were hoping to bring in one of the most talented players in the conference this summer.

“This was a high-profile potential test of the SEC’s intra-conference transfer rule. Mitchell had committed to Kentucky, but now he’s back at Missouri,” noted Pete Thamel of ESPN on X.

SEC rules currently state that a player transferring from one SEC team to another must do so within the official transfer portal window for the sport, a window that Mitchell missed.

A two-time All-SEC selection, Mitchell averaged18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists last season for Missouri, and certainly could have helped Kentucky take the next step under head coach Mark Pope next season.

Instead, Kentucky will have to pivot and look for other ways to upgrade their roster, with the season now not too far away. The Wildcats’ first game is set for November 3 at home against Manhattan.
