Yankees’ frustrating trade deadline failures didn’t stop them from smoking Red Sox

With their eyes set on winning the World Series, many around the league were concerned with how little the New York Yankees did at the trade deadline. However, the Yankees were able to silence any doubters in their recent series against the Boston Red Sox.

New York won three-out-of-four games, moving to 78-59 on the season. Their current run makes it a bit easier to forget about what happened at the deadline, via Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic.

“Not a bad weekend for the New York Yankees, considering they were still without Aaron Judge, faced a disadvantage against the Boston Red Sox’s abundance of left-handed pitching and failed to address their needs for catching and bullpen help at the trade deadline,” Rosenthal wrote.

“The Yankees tried for impact relievers, according to people briefed on the discussions,” he continued. “They could have prevented catcher Adley Rutschman from going to the Red Sox if they were willing to part with a package heavy on major-league talent. They even talked to the Toronto Blue Jays about right-handed starter Kevin Gausman.”

The Yankees’ needs aren’t going away. Catcher and relief pitching may remain a problem heading into the postseason. But New York has proven they’re still amongst the best in the league and a true threat to win the World Series. Capped off with a 16-1 victory on Sunday, the franchise outscored their opponents 32-3 over their four-game set.

New York now holds a four-game lead over Boston in the Wild Card race and a nine-game lead over the entire competition. Their series victory also gave the Yankees the tiebreaker over the Red Sox for any seeding scenarios.

With a team read to win, a quiet deadline could be deflating. But once the Yankees have their full team ready to compete, they’re convinced they belong amongst the best in baseball.
