Timberwolves rumors: Brian Windhorst ‘not trying to be jerk’ with Anthony Edwards contract extension take

Ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season, Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Anthony Edwards is excited about his team’s new look, which could lead to a contract extension, as ESPN’s Brian Windhorst discussed recently. The Timberwolves signed Jonathan Kuminga to a team-friendly contract, worth $13 million. In a summer when Minnesota landed LaMelo Ball and Kuminga after Ayo Dosunmu agreed to a five-year, $112 million extension, the team cemented its core as it looks to build on its 4-2 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

For the first time in three years, the Timberwolves were eliminated before reaching the Western Conference Finals. However, ahead of Edwards’ extension, he could feel differently about his team’s future by next summer, as Windhorst warned fans, per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective.

“He’s excited about the team now. When he needs to be excited is a year from now when he signs the extension,” Windhorst said. “And listen, if the extension was now, maybe he would sign it. Maybe he would be excited about this enough to sign it, and maybe he thinks LaMelo is going to be a perfect fit; and maybe he will be a perfect fit. I’m not trying to be a jerk. I’m just trying to be honest. The time where Ant has to feel really good about the Wolves is a year from now.”

Ahead of Anthony Edwards joining forces with LaMelo Ball for the Timberwolves’ upcoming season, the All-Star forward was honest about how the tandem will fare against the rest of the NBA, per ESPN’s NBA Courtside.

“It’s definitely going to be ups and downs,” Edwards said. “First year together maybe a lot of downs. But we’re gonna celebrate both of them. Celebrate the ups, celebrate the downs and just go with it.”

The Timberwolves will begin their preseason schedule on the road against the Milwaukee Bucks on October 5.
