Ravens bring in Jake Moody as Tyler Loop competition after rough preseason

The Baltimore Ravens have added competition at the kicker position, signing former third-round pick Jake Moody to the practice squad after Tyler Loop’s inconsistent preseason. The move gives the Ravens an experienced alternative while continuing to evaluate Loop heading into the regular season.

Loop, Baltimore’s second-year kicker, had a difficult preseason. Across the Ravens exhibition games, he converted 4 of 7 field-goal attempts, with misses from 49, 51 and 58 yards. His inability to consistently connect from longer distances has been a concern dating back to his rookie season. In 2025, Loop made 30 of 34 field goals overall, but went only 1-for-4 on attempts from 50 yards or farther.

His rookie campaign also ended with a costly miss. Loop pushed a 44-yard field-goal attempt wide right on the final play against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a kick that would have won the AFC North and sent Baltimore into the postseason. He had missed only one field goal inside 50 yards during his rookie season before that attempt.

Moody now provides another option. The 26-year-old entered the NFL with San Francisco as a third-round selection in the 2023 draft after playing at Michigan. He converted 21 of 25 field goals during his first NFL season but made only 70.6 percent of his attempts in 2024. San Francisco released him after he missed two of three field-goal attempts in the 2025 season opener.

However, Moody improved after leaving the 49ers. He made 8 of 9 field goals in two games with the Chicago Bears while replacing the injured Cairo Santos. He then converted 10 of 11 attempts during six games with the Washington Commanders. Across those eight games, he finished 18-for-20, including successful kicks from 51 and 56 yards.

For his NFL career, Moody is 64-for-82 on field goals, including 8-for-14 from 50 yards and beyond. He has also made 107 of 110 extra-point attempts.

Moody was released by the Commanders on August 17 after losing its kicking competition to undrafted rookie Drew Stevens. His connection to Ravens coach Jesse Minter also dates to Michigan, where the two overlapped in 2022 while Minter served as the Wolverines’ defensive coordinator.
