Commanders make official Laremy Tunsil, Jer’Zhan Newton injury moves

The Washington Commanders will be without left tackle Laremy Tunsil and defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton to begin the season, as both players are dealing with their own respective injuries. On Monday, the club made moves to create space on the roster that many were likely expecting.

Reports indicate that both Tunsil and Newton were placed on the IR, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. While they will each miss at least the first four weeks of the season, both players could return at some point during the campaign.

“The Commanders have placed DT Jer’Zhan Newton and LT Laremy Tunsil on IR, with both having a chance to return,” Rapoport reported.

Tunsil suffered a torn biceps muscle during training camp, which was a brutal blow for the Commanders’ offensive line. The 32-year-old’s return is currently unknown, as he has been ruled out indefinitely. His 11th season in the league will have to wait for now, as Washington will have to rely on either Brandon Coleman or DJ Humphries at left tackle for now.

Newton, on the other hand, is dealing with a torn pectoral muscle. The third-year veteran’s return is also unclear, as he underwent surgery in mid-to-late August. He could be out for a much longer period of time. He was initially expected to serve as the backup defensive tackle again, but with this injury, the Commanders are looking to Shy Tuttle to offer relief for Daron Payne.

In the meantime, Washington is preparing for the 2026-27 season. The campaign kicks off with a Week 1 matchup on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles.
