Chris Gotterup calls out PGA Championship pace of play, won’t call Aronimink unfair
The PGA Championship is often one of the tournaments that takes competitors on a lengthy journey to finish a round of golf. It makes for a significant challenge from both a physical and mental perspective, because it may take 5 or 5.5 hours to finish a single round. Non-major tournaments may see players complete 18 holes of golf in 4 hours.
Chris Gotterup was asked whether the setup at Aronimink was "unfair." Gave a great answer.
"So is it unfair, probably not. But is it going to make the round slow, yeah.

There are many reasons for the slow pace of play at the PGA Championship, including oversized fields, traffic on the course that leads to backups, challenging course setups and the pressure of playing in a major championship. Chris Gotterup, who finished his second round at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania tied for third place at 3-under-par, says the pace of play increases the challenge for the golfers in the field.
“So is it unfair, probably not,” Gotterup said after the second round of the PGA Championship. “But is it going to make the round slow, yeah. I don’t think it’s unfair by any stretch of the imagination, but you’re not going to get any 4-1/2 hour rounds out here if that’s what they, if that’s what’s going to happen. So, unfair, no, but, you know, tough to make birdies.”
While the pace of play has been maddeningly slow for the first two rounds, that will not be as big an issue during Saturday’s Moving Day round and in Sunday’s final round. The tournament field gets cut down to the low 70 golfers and ties. Players who are a 5 over par or worse through 36 holes are not allowed to continue. That means approximately 73 players from the original field of 156 will be cut from the tournament.
