Chiefs make quarterback roster move amid Patrick Mahomes injury

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a very busy offseason on the heels of their disastrous 2025 campaign, in which they missed the playoffs altogether. Any chance that the Chiefs have of bouncing back next season hinges on the health of Patrick Mahomes, who tore his ACL down the stretch of Kansas City’s season last year.

On Monday morning, the Chiefs announced a series of roster moves, including one regarding the quarterback position, that may raise fans’ eyebrows.

“We have signed Free Agents WR Xavier Loyd, DB Marlen Sewell, T Kahlil Benson. We have waived QB Jake Haener, DE Ethan Hurkett, and DT Zacch Pickens,” reported the Chiefs on their official team account on X, formerly Twitter.

The waiving of Haener decreases the Chiefs’ depth in the quarterback room for the time being, although the team did recently add to that department in the NFL Draft, when they selected former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in the seventh round.

Kansas City also added depth to its quarterback room earlier this offseason by bringing in veteran Justin Fields from the New York Jets, giving them multiple insurance policies in case Mahomes isn’t ready to go for the regular season.

That, combined with the return of Travis Kelce, along with some of the other moves that the Chiefs have made this offseason, including signing Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III away from the Seattle Seahawks, could be enough to vault Kansas City back into contender status in the AFC playoff picture, and make last year’s disappointment nothing more than a blip on their dynastic radar.

In any case, the Chiefs’ schedule for the upcoming 2026 season is slated to be released later this month.
