Chargers sign former Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel weapon to practice squad

The Los Angeles Chargers are adding another intriguing young receiver to their organization ahead of Week 1, via Adam Schefter. Los Angeles signed former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. to its practice squad, giving the second-year receiver another opportunity after his time with Miami came to an end.

Wease originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, where he played alongside current Chicago Bears receiver Luther Burden III. The 6-foot-2 receiver flashed some potential during his rookie season with the Dolphins. Wease caught six passes for 139 yards and one touchdown, averaging an impressive 23.2 yards per reception in limited opportunities.

Now he’ll attempt to work his way up the depth chart in Los Angeles as he reunites with Mike McDaniel.

The Chargers already have six receivers on their 53-man roster and additional depth on the practice squad, meaning Wease faces an uphill battle to earn a promotion. But that’s exactly why adding him to the practice squad makes sense.

If injuries begin piling up at receiver during the season, the Chargers will already have another young option learning the offense and practicing with the team.

Wease also benefits from remaining inside an NFL building rather than waiting for another opportunity as a free agent. He’ll get valuable practice reps, continue developing, and have a chance to show the Chargers’ coaching staff what he can offer. He’s an interesting player for the Chargers to keep around in case they need receiving help later this season.

The Chargers and Arizona Cardinals meet at SoFi Stadium next week for Week 1.
