CC Sabathia reveals how he found out his son was drafted by Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers created a full-circle family moment Sunday in the 2026 MLB Draft by selecting Carsten Sabathia III, the son of Hall of Famer CC Sabathia, in the 20th round.

The Brewers used the 611th overall pick on Sabathia, a first baseman who played at Houston. He batted .283 with six home runs and 18 RBIs, posting a .885 OPS in 37 games with the Cougars.

Sabathia learned of the selection through a call from Rickie Weeks Jr., his former Brewers teammate. Weeks now serves in baseball operations and scouting for the Brewers, connecting the club’s 2008 team with its next generation.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Curt Hogg posted a clip on X, formerly Twitter, of the 2025 Hall of Fame inductee explaining how he learned the news.

The 2009 World Series champion said he was riding with friends when Weeks called:

“So I was actually in the car with all my friends, and then Rickie Weeks called me,” Sabathia said. “So it was kind of crazy, full circle. Teammate calls you about your son getting drafted by the organization he works for is cool.”

Sabathia’s bond with Milwaukee remains unusually strong for a player who spent only part of one season there. The left-hander went 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA in 17 starts after arriving in 2008, helping the club end a 26-year postseason drought.

The Brewers honored him with induction into its Wall of Honor in May, two months before drafting his son.

Carsten now faces the challenge of turning a late-round opportunity into a professional career. The family connection gives his selection meaning, but the opportunity is his own.

Eighteen years after Milwaukee trusted the older Sabathia to carry a playoff push, the organization gave his son the chance to begin a separate chapter with the Brewers.
