Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell defends James Harden’s legacy amid ring criticism

Another year has passed with James Harden missing out in his seemingly never-ending pursuit of an ever-elusive ring. Harden’s pursuit of a title in Year 17 of his career got a new lease in life after he arrived on the Cleveland Cavaliers via a midseason trade from the Los Angeles Clippers. But the Cavs ended up falling short once more, with the New York Knicks sweeping them in the Eastern Conference Finals, with Game 4 ending in embarrassing fashion for Cleveland, losing 130-93 at home.

Harden is becoming an easy scapegoat yet again; he averaged just 16 points per game in the Cavs’ four-game sweep at the hands of the Knicks, and he shot 38.9 percent from the field, including horrible shooting nights in Games 1 and 4 (5-16 and 2-8, respectively). He continues to struggle in important contests, and this has come to be one of the most defining aspects of his legacy.

Be that as it may, Harden’s partner in the Cavs backcourt, Donovan Mitchell, believes that The Beard hasn’t gotten a fair shake in terms of the discourse regarding his legacy.

“This man changed the game of basketball. We live in such a ring-dominant culture that we’re willing to write a guy off because he hasn’t gotten there — a guy that’s transcended basketball. We don’t talk about his greatness enough,” Mitchell said in his postgame presser, via SNY.

“He was two inches away from a Conference Finals with the Brooklyn Nets. Some of that is just unlucky stuff, can’t control that. And he was on a bad hamstring. We don’t talk about him playing through it. … I think it’s really, truly unfair, to be honest. Now, more than ever, that I see it on a daily basis, but that’s just the society we live in.”

There are some legitimate black eyes in Harden’s playoff legacy, like in the 2017 NBA playoffs. But his lack of a ring notwithstanding, this is one of the best winners in NBA history, with his teams consistently being in the playoffs, and once everything is said and done, there’s an argument to be made that that should be his lasting legacy.,
