Cause of death for former HBCU star William Davis revealed

The cause of death for former HBCU star turned Sam Houston State transfer William Davis has been revealed. The former Virginia Union running back passed away at the age of 22 last Saturday.

A new report by TMZ unveils new revelations in Davis’s death. TMZ reports that Davis died from gunshot wounds to the chest. In early reports, his cause of death had not been released, although it was reported that he died by suicide. The investigation into his death is still ongoing.

Davis made his mark at Virginia Union as a key contributor on the Panthers’ defense from 2022 through 2024. Across 19 games, Davis compiled 50 tackles, including 37 solo stops, while adding 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, five interceptions, five pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Davis’ impact at Virginia Union extended beyond the field. Before entering the transfer portal, he earned a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurial management and helped establish a winning culture within the program. He later continued his football journey with stops at West Virginia Mountaineers football, where he appeared in one game, and eventually Sam Houston Bearkats football.

After announcing his transfer to Sam Houston State in January, Davis discussed his decision in comments obtained by Nilson Sports and later participated in the program’s spring practices.

“Sam Houston felt like home from the moment I first set foot on campus. As a Virginia kid that had played every snap of football in my life within driving distance of home, it was important to me that I’d play somewhere where I fit seamlessly into the culture if I was going to be so distant geographically.”

Following news of his death, Sam Houston State released a statement Sunday evening honoring his memory.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Will Davis. Will was a beloved member of our Bearkat football family here at Sam Houston who touched the lives of everyone he knew. Will was an upbeat, positive, passionate young man who will be sincerely missed. Tanya, the kids and I are praying for Will’s family during this difficult time,” said head coach Phil Longo in a statement.
