Carlos Alcaraz gives ominous French Open injury update after Barcelona, Madrid withdrawals
Carlos Alcaraz is looking for his third straight title at the French Open, but his participation has become uncertain due to a wrist injury he suffered in the Barcelona Open early this month.
Alcaraz already felt discomfort in the first round of the said tournament, but he still pushed through, beating Otto Virtanen. He eventually withdrew in the second round against Tomas Machac.
Subsequent tests showed that his wrist injury was more serious than initially thought, forcing him to withdraw from the Madrid Open as well on Monday.
On Monday, the 22-year-old Alcaraz gave an honest update about his situation ahead of the French Open.
“The next test will be crucial. We’ve been trying to do everything we can to make sure this test goes well. I’m trying to be very patient. But we are good, we are just waiting a little bit,” said the world No. 2 in the video posted by Univers Tennis.
“We have a few tests in the next few days, and then we will see how the injury is and what the next steps will be.”

Alcaraz conquered Roland Garros last year after defeating Jannik Sinner. He ruled it for the first time in 2024 after trouncing Alexander Zverev.
Unfortunately, his wrist injury could prevent him from defending his throne and winning his eighth Grand Slam crown.
Alcaraz, who recently attended the game of the Los Angeles Lakers, won his first title at the Australian Open in January, beating Novak Djokovic.
While it would be unfortunate for the fans if Alcaraz does not compete at the French Open, it is quite understandable that he is erring on the side of caution regarding his physique. Rushing to return could prove to be more harmful in the long run.
