Cardinals’ Dustin May drops brutally honest admission after shutting out Padres

It was a good night for St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dustin May. And he has been tough lately. Furthermore, May dropped a brutally honest admission after shutting out the Padres on Monday.

May said the Cardinals seem to be bringing out the best in him, according to MLB.com.

“It’s fun,” May said. “They definitely rejuvenated a lot more spark in me than I initially thought that I had. It’s been fantastic.”

May carried a perfect game into the seventh inning before surrendering a walk and a hit. But he righted the ship quickly and finished off what he started for the first time in his MLB career.

The Cardinals are tickled with what they are seeing from the 28-year-old right-hander. May spent his first five seasons with the Dodgers before missing the 2024 campaign with an injury. He pitched for the Dodgers and Red Sox in 2025. The Cardinals grabbed him, and he’s off to a 5-6 start with an ERA of 3.75.

However, he hasn’t allowed a run in his last 15 innings. Manager Oliver Marmol said May is delivering when the Cardinals need it.

“It means a lot,” Marmol said. “We placed a bet on — if this guy was healthy, coming out of everything that he’s had over the last couple of years, and got back to his fighting weight, had a real offseason and got after it the way we know he’s capable of — he can do some pretty impressive things.

“He’s done exactly that. So, to have his story and be able to pitch the way he did tonight is awesome to see.”

May didn’t want to leave the game despite the seventh-inning hiccup.

“I asked him if he had enough in the tank,” Marmol said. “He gave me a quick glance and walked away.”

May recounted the events similarly.

“Oh, a hundred percent,” May said. “He walked down and said, ‘How do you feel?’ I said, ‘Is that a question?’ Like, I’m going back out there.”
