Canadiens’ East Final defeat extends Canada, Original 6 Stanley Cup drought

The Montreal Canadiens were blown out 6-1 in Game 5 on Friday night by the Carolina Hurricanes, who closed out the Eastern Conference Final in five games and slammed the door on Montreal’s 2025-26 season. The result sends the Hurricanes to the 2026 Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights, with Game 1 scheduled for Tuesday, June 2.

Montreal’s elimination stretches a 32nd straight season without a team from Canada winning the Stanley Cup and an 11th straight without an Original Six winner. The Canadiens, the youngest conference finalist in 33 years with a 25.8 average age, lost the series against Carolina 4-1.

The Hurricanes set the tone early with a three-goal first period. Taylor Hall scored first following a contested goal that survived a goaltender interference challenge by Montreal, despite concerns over contact involving Logan Stankoven and Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes. Stankoven and Eric Robinson also scored in the opening frame, as Carolina controlled play and outshot Montreal 15-4.

The Canadiens were never able to recover after falling behind early in consecutive games. They ended the series on a four-game losing streak and were outscored 10-1 over the final two games. Over the last seven periods of the series, Montreal managed just one goal, which came when the game was already decided. The Hurricanes won the series after the Canadiens had opened with a Game 1 win.

Montreal’s offensive core remained in a slump throughout the postseason. The line of Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky finished with six even-strength goals in 19 playoff games, despite scoring 72 during the regular season. The Canadiens had advanced through two Game 7 victories over the Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres.

Carolina goaltender Frederik Andersen finished Game 5 with 23 saves and allowed just five goals in the series. He recorded two or fewer goals allowed in 12 of 13 postseason starts and posted three shutouts. The Hurricanes improved to 10-0 in best-of-seven series when leading 3-1 and extended a run that included 10 consecutive goals during the series before Montreal responded.

With the win, Carolina reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years, last doing so in 2006.
