The New York Giants are currently gearing up for their final preseason game of the schedule against the New York Jets on Friday. On Tuesday, the team got a rough injury update regarding a key member of their wide receiver room.

“Giants WR Calvin Austin was carted off today from practice with what one source described as a ‘serious knee injury,'” reported ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter on X, formerly Twitter.

Austin III was expected to play a sizable role as a supplementary receiver for the Giants this year, but if he is forced to miss extended time with this injury, that could open up a roster spot that would have otherwise gone elsewhere.

The most high-profile name competing for a spot in the Giants’ wide receiver room is franchise legend Odell Beckham Jr., who burst onto the scene as a star for New York in the mid-2010s and has bounced around the league since, not having played last year.

Some had speculated that the chances of Beckham Jr. securing a roster spot at the age of 33, and with a storied injury history of his own, might be long, but they could certainly get a bump depending on the status of Austin’s status moving forward.

Meanwhile, the team is hoping for a full injury recovery from number one wideout Malik Nabers, who went down with a torn ACL last season against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Giants are slated to kick off their 2026 regular season schedule on September 13 with a home game against the divisional rival Dallas Cowboys.
