The Colorado Avalanche were hit directly in the face by the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final, and they didn’t have any answers to the barrage that John Tortorella’s team threw at them. With Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon playing hurt, and Valeri Nichushkin out of the lineup, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar’s only play was to swap MacKenzie Blackwood for Scott Wedgewood as the starting goalie to attempt to put some life into his team.

Blackwood was stellar in Game 4, keeping Colorado in a game that they likely should not have been in. Despite the heroics, the Avalanche’s offense continued to look stale, letting down both their goaltenders over the course of the four games. It wasn’t lost on Makar, according to DNVR Avalanche via X, formerly Twitter.

“It’s tough to digest right now. You feel for your guys. You feel for Blacky, who came in, had an incredible game, incredible revenge game. I feel like he earned more than what we gave him tonight,” Makar told reporters after the game.

The Avalanche have an aging core that can all return next year, and not a whole lot of cap space available to improve the team. They’ll be an intriguing watch this offseason, as Chris MacFarland attempts to improve a team that blew away the competition during the regular season. Despite that success, it’d be hard to trust the same group not to fall short in the postseason once again after the offense left their goaltenders out to dry in this series.
