Bulls pick up Leonard Miller for $2.4 million team option

The Chicago Bulls came off a week of making big moves in the NBA draft to make one more. Chicago officially exercised a $2.4 million team option for Leonard Miller, per Keith Smith of Spotrac.

As a result, Miller’s contract is now temporarily non-guaranteed, before becoming fully guaranteed on June 30.

If the team option is declined, Miller would become eligible for a three-year $52.4 million contract, according to Smith. The Bulls can reach $63.5 million in cap space this summer. It is likely that the Bulls would re-sign Miller rather than offer him a lucractive extension with a trade option included, particularly to give him ample time to prove his worth.

Therefore, if Miller can solidify his place this year, the possibilities are endless for him in Chicago in the years ahead.

Miller is coming off a standout 27-game stint with the Bulls after being traded in February by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He averaged 11.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while also averaging 23.1 minutes per game. He also shot 55.5% from the field and 35.6% from the 3-point line, as well as starting in 12 games.

Compared to his time in Minnesota, Miller saw significantly more playing time. Miller played a total of 179 minutes over 2.5 seasons with the Timberwolves. He ended up playing 378 minutes over 19 games in Chicago.

During that stretch, many had expected the Bulls to retain Miller for the future.

That being said, it could be a struggle for Miller to get playing time with the additions of Caleb Wilson and Dailyn Swain to the rotation.
