Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo asks reporter what he’d do in star’s position with supermax decision looming

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks is anything but certain, and now, the ‘Greek Freak’ is even asking for advice from reporters.

Although Antetokounmpo has just completed the first season of his three-year, $175 million contract extension, he can, if he so chooses, opt out after next season and become an unrestricted free agent in 2027. This effectively gives Antetokounmpo considerable leverage amid constant rumors that he will be traded either this summer or next year.

When asked recently by a reporter about whether he would sign an extension with the Bucks if he isn’t traded this summer, Antetokounmpo said it’s too early to say before flipping the question on the reporter.

“But, what would you do, basketball-wise? Money doesn’t mean nothing to me. Zero. Absolutely zero. What means something to me is winning. What would you do? Take money out of it,” Antetokounmpo said, via The Athletic’s Eric Nehm.

Although the reporter never answered, he asked Antetokounmpo if he would be opposed to signing the extension as long as Milwaukee keeps him on its roster come the beginning of next October. The longtime Bucks star said he would not be opposed, but added, “we’ll see when we get there.”

“Until we get to October, it’s eight months, seven months. It’s a long time,” Antetokounmpo said.

Antetokounmpo, 31, is set to make $58.5 million next season and then will have a $62.8 million decision to make during the 2027 offseason — unless he signs an extension before then, of course.

Selected 15th overall by Milwaukee in 2013, Antetokounmpo has been the only constant for the team over the last 13 years, during which time he led the Bucks to their first NBA championship in 50 years back in 2021.
