Bryce Underwood drops the mic on why Michigan football will improve in 2026
As the Michigan football team looks to put the country on notice after a whirlwind past couple of years, the program will be led by quarterback Bryce Underwood and new head coach Kyle Whittingham. Looking at the team, Underwood would break his silence on the Michigan football program and how they will improve in 2026.
Last season with the Wolverines, Underwood was a freshman, where he threw 2,428 yards to go along with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He would end last season on a sour note, throwing three interceptions in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Texas, though he mentioned how he had to “get over it,” and sees the program as being “more player-led this season.”
“We went through a lot, but I think we’re going to be more player-led this season. I feel like we are more of a team now,” Underwood said, via On3 Sports.
“Guess I look at it as a test run,” Underwood continued. “I knew I had a lot to learn and that there would be ups and downs. I’m just glad the team welcomed me in and helped me grow as a leader. I knew overall they believed in me, and that helped me never lose belief in what I was doing. I looked at it as we were building together, and we’re going to keep building.”
Michigan football’s Kyle Whittingham on Bryce Underwood
There’s no denying that Underwood will face a lot of pressure with the Michigan football team, especially with the immense amount of talent he has. When it comes to the new head coach in Whittingham, he would express how Underwood “made some big strides this spring.”
“We found out a lot more about him, and he made some big strides this spring, his footwork, his pocket presence, his mechanics, his decision-making. He’s taken a step forward in all those areas,” Whittingham said. “He still has a ways to go, and we’ll continue that through the summer and fall camp.”
Underwood and the Michigan Wolverines look to improve after finishing with a 9-4 record, as the 2026 season opener is on Sept. 5 against Western Michigan.
