Bruins making obvious Patrice Bergeron move in 2026-27
The Boston Bruins are set to retire Patrice Bergeron’s number 37 during the 2026-27 season in a very obvious move. Bergeron spent 19 years in Boston, all wearing his iconic number 37. Now, no one will ever wear that number for Boston again.
To the rafters.

Bergeron will be the 14th player in Bruins history to have his number retired, joining some of the greatest players of all time. Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, Zdeno Chara, and Phil Esposito are among the players in the TD Garden rafters. Bergeron brought a championship to Boston, scoring 20 points in 23 games during the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Bergeron ranks third in franchise history in regular-season goals (422) and points (1.040). He also ranks third in playoff goals (50) and points (128). But the offensive end is not where Bergeron made his biggest impact. His reputation is as one of the best defensive centers of his generation, having won six Selke Trophies as the league’s best defensive forward.
The next honor coming for Bergeron is the Hockey Hall of Fame. He has already been inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame for his international play, but the big hall in Toronto should be coming soon. The 40-year-old is eligible for the Hall of Fame for the first time in 2026 and is deserving of a first-ballot induction.
Bergeron is the second player from his era of Bruins hockey to have his number retired. Chara’s number 33 is in the rafters already, on account of his captaincy of the 2011 squad. Bergeron was the captain after him and is joining him. Brad Marchand is still playing, but will almost certainly join them to complete the trio. David Krejci and Tuukka Rask have arguments to join them, as well.
The Bruins have not announced a date yet for Bergeron’s retirement ceremony. But when they do, it’ll be one of the hottest tickets in town.
