Bruins’ David Pastrnak drops ‘unacceptable’ truth bomb on Game 4 blowout

The Boston Bruins are on the brink of elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs after suffering a brutal 6-1 home defeat to the Buffalo Sabres in Game 4 of their opening round playoff series.

The Bruins appeared to be in a strong position after Game 2 as they had split the first two games in Buffalo, and playing at home should have been an advantage. Boston had been dominant at home all season long, but the Sabres were unimpressed. They won games 3 and 4 at TD Garden.

The fourth game loss was especially painful for the Bruins and their fans, as the Sabres dominated from the opening faceoff. They took a 4-0 lead in the opening period and it appeared the Sabres were skating by their hosts throughout the period.

David Pastrnak is the Bruins’ best player and the 100-point scorer said his team’s performance was not good enough. “It was a wasted opportunity and completely unacceptable,” Pastrnak said. “We expect better from ourselves. We are better than that. To play like that in an afternoon game when the first period is so important. We know we have to be better than that.”

The Bruins had major problems dealing with Buffalo’s forecheck in the opening 20 minutes. They gave up the puck frequently and many of those turnovers resulted in scoring opportunities.

Goaltender Jeremy Swayman was later relieved in their third period after the score increased to 6-0. Sean Kuraly prevented Sabres goalie Alex Lyon from earning a shutout when he scored a short-handed goal with less than a minute remaining in the game.

The Bruins will try to keep the Sabres from winning the series when the two teams meet in Game 5 in Buffalo Tuesday night.
