Brian Schottenheimer’s ‘anywhere’ Caleb Downs boast will have Cowboys fans hyped

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for the 2026 NFL season. Dallas certainly has confidence in its ability to compete for a Super Bowl this year. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer has a lot of faith in this group, including rookie defensive back Caleb Downs.

Downs has made quite the impression in Cowboys training camp this year. The former Ohio State star figures to play a big role on this defense in 2026. Schottenheimer’s recent comments indicate they may use him in a variety of situations, as well.

“When I asked Brian Schottenheimer at camp where Caleb Downs can line up, he said, ‘anywhere.’ Then added, he can cover CeeDee Lamb up the seam. The versatility on display here,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported, alluding to a clip of Downs in practice.

Downs entered the 2026 NFL Draft as one of the most highly rated defensive prospects in the class. However, he fell out of the top 10. The slide didn’t last long, though, as Dallas scooped him up with the 11th overall pick.

The Cowboys are hoping an injection of youth on defense can help improve the team overall. Dallas finished the 2025 campaign with a 7-9-1 record on the year. They failed to make the playoffs, missing out for the second year in a row. It was also the fourth season without postseason football in seven seasons.

Downs is establishing himself as a key member of this defense early on. If he can translate this momentum to the regular season, Dallas may be a tough defense to break through. The Cowboys begin their 2026 regular season on September 13 against the New York Giants.
