Mets’ Andy Green returning to front office the ‘expectation’ in 2027

The New York Mets fired Carlos Mendoza as manager during this season. It has been a rough campaign for the Amazins, who are now headed up by Andy Green on an interim basis. With the season nearing an end, attention is turning to the upcoming managerial search.

Green has guided New York through some turbulent times this year. Having formed relationships with these players, it’s fair to wonder if he will be in contention for the full-time job. A recent update affirms that the “expectation” is that he will head back to the front office, though.

“People familiar with the Mets’ internal deliberations affirm the plan remains for Green to return to the front office, though not necessarily in the player development role he held previously. One role those people floated as a potential fit: General manager, a position Cohen has talked about filling during Stearns’ tenure but never has,” SNY reporter Chelsea Janes reported on Wednesday.

Green’s exclusion from the managerial search is in line with previous comments. The interim Mets manager has said he won’t enter the race for the job, as James noted. And the president of baseball operations, David Stern, has also stated something to this effect.

“My expectation, and I think Andy’s expectation, is that he is going to rejoin the front office, and I have no reason to believe otherwise right now,” Sterns said, via Janes.

It’s no easy task taking over a team midseason as Green has this year. However, it appears as if this season has been enough for him. What role he takes on in Queens next remains to be seen. But his spot somewhere in the organization appears to be safe.
