The New York Mets got a measure of good news on Bo Bichette after their third baseman was forced out of Wednesday’s 8-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers with an ankle injury. Bichette exited early after fouling a ball off his own ankle at Citi Field, with Brett Baty taking over at third base.

Green stopped short of offering a definitive timeline, framing the situation as something that would become clearer with rest. “We’ll see where he’s at when he wakes up in the morning,” the skipper said. “You never really know how that is till the next day, but hoping he’s fine.”

A negative X-ray rules out a fracture, though contusions can still leave a player sore and limited for a game or two depending on the location and swelling. For now, Bichette’s status appears to hinge on how the ankle responds overnight rather than on any structural damage.

The update carries added weight given how the season has gone for Bichette. The infielder joined the Mets in January on a three-year, $126 million contract with player options, his first stop after seven seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Brought in to play third base, he spent much of the year at shortstop while Francisco Lindor recovered from a calf strain. The signing added a two-time All-Star on a big-money deal, but his debut campaign has been an uneven one at the plate as he adjusts to a new league and a new home.

Bichette has also dealt with lower-body issues before this. Earlier in the summer, he missed time around the All-Star break with soreness in his legs and right ankle, discomfort Green traced to a stretch in which Bichette repeatedly fouled balls off his legs. This latest knock lands in the same general area, which makes the clean imaging all the more reassuring.

The Mets will provide further clarity once Bichette is reevaluated. Until then, the takeaway is a positive one by injury standards. No breaks, no immediate alarm, and a manager cautiously optimistic that his infielder avoided anything serious.
