Brewers’ Christian Yelich reveals why Pat Murphy actually benched Cooper Pratt

The Milwaukee Brewers made headlines on Tuesday night when rookie infielder Cooper Pratt was benched against the New York Mets. Pratt hit a pop fly to the outfield that eventually fell for a hit. He made it to first safely, but was pulled immediately after reaching base.

Some have questioned why Pratt was pulled from the game. The rookie infielder appeared to run hard and ensure he made it to first. Some have theorized that manager Pat Murphy wanted him to end up on second. Veteran outfielder Christian Yelich believes this was more about culture and how Murphy coaches than anything else.

“You couldn’t coach that way throughout the league. You really couldn’t. There’s a lot of players that wouldn’t accept that. It’s easier to get buy-in because of the amount of games we’ve won and how we’ve won,” the Brewers outfielder said, via MLB.com.

For what it’s worth, Murphy did confirm that he felt Pratt should’ve tried for the extra base. But he also said that this play wasn’t the only thing that led to the rookie infielder’s benching against the Mets.

“I think a ball that was up there that long, and hit [the ground] and kicked [away], you have to be on second. Then I was ticked about the bunt thing, and there’s a couple of other things that add to all of this that I don’t need to get into. But if you lived in the clubhouse, you would understand it,” Murphy said.

The Brewers ended up falling to the Mets on Tuesday night. That loss marked their second straight defeat, and has Milwaukee looking for a way back in the win column. Let’s see how Pratt and his teammates respond against New York on Wednesday night.
