Mike Breen shares heartfelt admission about joining booth

Legendary sports broadcaster Mike Breen has done it all and seen it all. In June, Breen called the Knicks’ title run, fulfilling a dream. Now he is fulfilling another dream: calling a game for the New York Mets.

On Wednesday, Breen said to the SNY Mets crew that calling a game for them was on his “bucket list,” per SNY Mets.

“I love that booth,” Breen said. “It’s one of the great booths of all-time.”

Breen was in the booth calling a game at Citi Field in New York against the Milwaukee Brewers. Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez joined him. During the broadcast, Breen said Hernandez intimidated him while doing radio broadcasts in 1986 for WNBC radio, per Andrew Battifarano of The New York Post.  He referred to Hernandez as “Mr. Hernandez.”

Currently, Breen is the play-by-play announcer for the NBA on ESPN. He has called NBA games for 30+ years for ESPN, NBC, ABC, and has called Knicks games. Breen has established his place amongst the greats with his signature line, “Bang!” after every big shot. He also did play-by-play for WNBA games on NBC from 1997 to 1999.

Additionally, Breen has set a record for calling 21 NBA Finals.

Meanwhile, the Mets’ organization has had its litany of broadcasters over the years. Lindsey Nelson was in the booth calling their miracle run to the World Series in 1969. Other names include Ralph Kiner, Bob Murphy, and Howie Rose.

The current announcing team includes Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling. They are the longest-running broadcast team in franchise history.

Breen is a native New Yorker and grew up a huge Mets fan.
