Braves star pitcher shares huge injury update before Nationals clash
The Atlanta Braves enter Saturday with an MLB-best 3.08 ERA, and they do not even have one of their most promising arms. Right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach has not made a start since June of 2025, as an elbow injury forced him into an arduous recovery. He is gradually approaching an MLB mound, however.
The 25-year-old told Braves reporter Grant McAuley that he started throwing on flat ground at 60 feet five days ago, engaging in the exercise every other day. Schwellenbach will stick with this plan for the next two weeks, and if things progress as hoped, he will begin doing some work on the hill. “He feels really good and is very encouraged by the early sessions,” McAuley posted on X.
Although the former second-round draft pick still has a long way to go before coming off the injured list, this news suggests that he will have the opportunity to pitch in 2026. Atlanta is receiving splendid production from 2024 National League Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale and 2023 All-Star Bryce Elder. Spencer Strider is finding his form again as well. That being said, a team could never have enough impactful hurlers during a playoffs run.
If Spencer Schwellenbach picks up where he left off — 3.23 ERA and 1.007 WHIP in 234 1/3 career innings pitched — then the Braves should be able to match any other club’s starting rotation. He is trying not to get ahead of himself, though.
The young righty must stay the course and continue to build up his strength. Fortunately, Atlanta (36-16) has given itself a nice cushion in his absence.
