Blue Jays’ Eric Lauer eases neck injury concerns with candid explanation

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Eric Lauer was seen wearing tape on his neck during the 7-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Shortly after the contest, Lauer explained what was going on, as the tape caused concern for injury.

The 30-year-old left-hander claims the tape is simply helping him adjust his posture, according to sports broadcaster Hazel Mae. Lauer did admit the problem tends to occur whenever he is sitting down.

“We’re trying to fix some things posture-wise,” said Lauer… “When I’m sitting, I’ve been having a little neck issues… It’s more like a reminder to keep my head back and make sure I’m not slouching or anything.”

Blue Jays manager John Schneider stated he wasn’t even aware Eric Lauer was dealing with neck pain until he saw the eight-year veteran wearing the tape on his neck during Wednesday’s contest, per Mae. Schneider didn’t seem too concerned about the injury either, but did say the Blue Jays will keep tabs on Lauer moving forward.

“Didn’t hear anything about that until I saw [the tape] on him,” said Schneider about Lauer. “So I checked with him, said he felt fine. Stuff was pretty light today, though, so we’ll see how he is.”

Lauer ended the day with three strikeouts while allowing seven hits, two walks, and three earned runs through five innings of work. It’s been a bit of a rough start to the campaign for the Blue Jays‘ starter, as Lauer owns a 7.13 ERA and 1.472 WHIP.

John Schneider and the coaching staff will likely keep a close eye on Lauer for the time being. He’ll have several days of rest before taking the mound again. Eric Lauer’s next start is projected for Tuesday, April 28, when the Blue Jays face off against the Boston Red Sox.
