Bills’ Josh Allen still takes the blame for Sean McDermott firing

Quarterback Josh Allen gets plenty of credit whenever the Buffalo Bills succeed. But at the same time, he isn’t shying away from criticism if things don’t go Buffalo’s way.

After nine years with the franchise, the Bills decided to move on from head coach Sean McDermott after the 2025 season. In Allen’s mind, he is still harboring the blame for that decision, via Michael Silver of the Athletic.

“I think about that all the time. There are certain plays throughout the game — and that’s going to be every game — where you’re like, ‘I could have done more.’ And I always feel like I can do more.’”

McDermott’s teams went 98-50 under his watch, making the playoffs in all but one season. However, the Bills never advanced to the Super Bowl in that time, losing both AFC Championships they appeared. The final nail in the coffin for Buffalo was their 2025 season ending in the Divisional Round.

In that game, a 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos, Allen completed 25-of-39 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. His 12 rushing attempts led to 66 scoreless yards.

Despite the turnovers, Allen was crucial to helping the Bills battle as hard as they did. But ultimately, a loss is a loss. And in this case, it cost McDermott his job.

As Buffalo prepares for the Joe Brady era, Allen knows he must further step up. The Bills have been perennial contenders since their quarterback broke onto the scene. But hype is one thing. Allen and company actually achieving their Super Bowl dreams would tell an entirely different story.
