76ers’ Mike Gansey tips cap to Brad Stevens on Jaylen Brown trade

The Philadelphia 76ers could argue and say they had the best offseason of any team this summer, and it wouldn’t be up for debate. Landing Jaylen Brown and LeBron James is huge, and it makes them instant title favorites before the season starts.

The first domino to fall was Brown, as he was traded from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George and draft capital. 76ers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey recently spoke about the Brown trade and how he and Brad Stevens worked to get something done.

“I would’ve never thought Jaylen Brown was going to be a 76er, but we just kept at it,” Gansey said. “We kept talking to Boston. I don’t know exactly when we talked to Boston, but it was a long process of talking to them and going back and forth. Boston kept calling, we kept calling … Credit Brad [Stevens]. We really kept this thing quiet. They got Paul [George]. Paul still can really play.”

Nobody knew that the 76ers were in play for Brown until the actual trade, so both sides did a good job keeping it quiet throughout the process.

At his introductory press conference, Brown recalled the moment he found out he was getting traded to the 76ers.

“I’m not even sure — when I first got traded, I just threw my phone across the room,” Brown said. “I think [Tyrese] Maxey reached out to me first. He reached out and was like, ‘I know there’s a lot of stuff going on right now. But we’re excited to have you.’ Maxey and V.J. [Edgecombe] [reached out] around the same time.”

What they didn’t know for certain at that time was that James would join the team at the end of July, and they may have one of the best starting lineups in the league.
