Bears’ Caleb Williams breaks down his responsibilities in Ben Johnson’s offense
Apart from the Chicago Bears’ joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals, Caleb Williams has not touched the ground during the team’s preseason action. And head coach Ben Johnson couldn’t care less.
He has made it clear on a recent occasion that he does not need to test Williams in preseason games to consider him ready before Week 1. For the star quarterback, however, he’s aware of the “command at the line” for him.
“Yeah! I can actually more or less see the coverage and not necessarily be trying to figure out my drop or thinking about my drop, not worried about the routes and things like that. Just trusting the guys knowing where they’re going to be and then trying to put the ball in the right spot when the cover presents itself,” he recently said during his conversation with NFL Network’s senior national reporter Stacey Dales.

Just as he mentioned, Johnson set up an offensive strategy for the team from the ground up after joining the team last year in January. Though the last season was more about the team and a little less about Williams, the Bears were one of the best teams in terms of offense.
The Bears finished ranked No. 6 with an average of 369.5 yards per game, as per Fox Sports. Additionally, their rushing offense remained third-best in the league with 144.5 yards and 19 touchdowns, while the passing offense stood 10th with 225.1 yards and 28 touchdowns.
However, ahead of his third season at the camp, he additionally made an honest admission about his “roller-coaster” joint practice against the Bengals.
“Just got to be better. Whether it’s myself and protecting the football or the front or wide receivers, all of us, it’s a combination of all of us being able to go out there and execute. It’s going to be a focus point for sure,” he said.
In the first two seasons with the Bears, the star QB has appeared in 34 regular-season games. It also includes a total of 7,483 passing yards, 47 passing touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
The team is said to be saving his production for the regular-season starter to avoid any casualties, given they are dealing with quite a few injury struggles, including cornerback Kyler Gordon and Luther Burden.
