It’s championship or bust for the 76ers in 2027, according to Shaq
The Philadelphia 76ers spent the offseason chasing star power, and Shaquille O’Neal believes that pursuit now comes with zero margin for excuses. The Hall of Famer laid out a stark expectation for Philadelphia heading into the 2026-27 season: win it all, or consider the year a failure.
“This team was put together to win the championship,” O’Neal said in an appearance on SportsCenter. “And I think if they don’t win the championship, as players, I think all those players will be very, very disappointed. They have all the pieces they need.”

It’s hard to argue with the raw talent Philadelphia assembled. The 76ers reshaped their roster around a starting five of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, and the newly signed LeBron James, who joined the frontcourt after eight seasons with the Lakers. James announced the move on social media, calling it his “last decision” after seriously weighing retirement, and said he believes he can help make Philadelphia a championship team.
For O’Neal, the addition of James raises the stakes for everyone in the locker room, particularly Embiid. Shaq challenged the big man directly, questioning whether he still has the fire to reclaim his throne.
“My question to Joel, does he want it back? And if he does, please show me,” O’Neal said, noting how Jokic has since surpassed the Sixers center in the pecking order at the position.
The rest of the core carries its own motivations, and Shaq ran through them one by one. “I know LeBron wants to get one last one. Jaylen is feeling slighted. Maxey is making a name for himself,” O’Neal said. “Definitely the team to watch.” In his eyes, the mix of pride, talent, and timing makes Philadelphia must-see basketball this season.
That said, the on-paper firepower comes with real questions. James will be 42 years old by the time the playoffs arrive, and Embiid brings an injury-cursed history that has repeatedly derailed Philadelphia’s postseason hopes. Blending four ball-dominant stars will also take time, a challenge Maxey himself has acknowledged.
Still, O’Neal’s verdict leaves little room for nuance. With a roster this stacked, he expects nothing short of a title. If the Sixers fall short, in his view, the players themselves will carry the weight of that disappointment.
