Dave Roberts gets 100% real on Dodgers’ toughness after win over Pirates

The Los Angeles Dodgers walked it off in extra innings to defeat the pesky Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Los Angeles defeated Pittsburgh, 5-4, in 10 innings. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke about his team’s grit, following the win.

“Our guys just fight,” Roberts said, per MLB.com. “Even when we gave up the lead, we didn’t get down. And Tommy came up with an 0-2 base hit to win the game. We were short on pitching, so we needed that one.”

Tommy Edman turned out to be the hero for the Dodgers, in the contest. He hit a walk-off hit to score a run for Los Angeles in the bottom of the 10th.

Edman used an ice-cream inspired bat in his plate appearances.

“It’s cool that I came through with the walk-off hit today,” Edman said. “Our favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip, so it’s kind of a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone. It was fun to be able to use that today.”

The starting pitching was also there for the Dodgers on Friday. Yoshinobu Yamamoto was effective in his outing; he posted nine strikeouts in six-plus innings of work.

“I just wanted to maintain the momentum, which started in Colorado,” Yamamoto said through an interpreter.

Yamamoto’s teammates didn’t want to let their starting pitcher down.

“Every time he goes out there, he gives us a really good chance to win,” Edman said. “We did that today. Obviously, he didn’t get the win, I’m sure he deserved it. But it seems like every time he pitches, you know, just you know what you’re going to get.”

Los Angeles is first in the National League West this season. The Dodgers are striving for their third consecutive World Series championship. Following the win, the Dodgers improved to 78-51 on the campaign.

The Dodgers and Pirates are in action again Saturday. Pittsburgh fell to 63-67 on the campaign, with the loss.
