Baylor basketball rumors: Bears predicted to land VJ Edgecombe’s high school teammate in transfer portal

Baylor will never get star guard VJ Edgecombe back, but it can get his high school teammate in the college basketball transfer portal. The Bears are favored to land former Penn State guard Kayden Mingo, who played with Edgecombe at Long Island Lutheran High School.

Mingo entered the transfer portal at the end of the 2025-2026 season, his only year at Penn State. He has since visited Baylor and Oklahoma, according to On3 Sports’ Jamie Shaw, who expects him to commit to Scott Drew soon.

“Kayden Mingo officially entered the transfer portal last week, and he took visits to Baylor and Oklahoma to start this week,” Shaw wrote. “According to the intel I have gathered since his two visits, I have placed an RPM for Mingo to ultimately choose Baylor.”

Mingo averaged 13.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 28 games for the Nittany Lions as a freshman. He started every game he appeared in and ended the year 11th in the Big Ten in assists per game.

Baylor is also in play to potentially land Mingo’s younger brother, Dylan Mingo, a top-10 recruit of the incoming freshman class. Dylan Mingo, who also played at Long Island Lutheran, recently decommitted from North Carolina. He listed Baylor as one of his final schools before initially committing to the Tar Heels.

Needless to say, adding either Mingo brother would help in Baylor’s pursuit of the other.

Although neither can replace Edgecombe, adding the Mingo brothers would help Drew cope with the losses of NBA-bound stars Tounde Yessoufou and Cameron Carr. Baylor will return point guard Isaac Williams IV, but is otherwise losing six of its seven leading scorers from the 2025-2026 college basketball season.
